Malteurop inaugurates its first biomass energy plant at Vitry-le-François

World leader in malt and supplier to the world's major brewers, Malteurop is investing in renewable energy by opening its first biomass plant at its largest malting facility.

Reims, 18 January, 2013 – The biomass plant inaugurated today at Vitry-le-François (France) will supply the majority of the energy necessary for the production of malt at the site. The heating plant is fuelled by renewable fuel from the recycling of local forest resources. The new heating plant will add a fourth energy source to the site’s energy mix (biomass, cogeneration, gas boiler, and heat pump).

The wood-energy heating plant, built in partnership with Dalkia – a subsidiary of Veolia and EDF –, participates in reducing emissions of greenhouse-effect gases, avoiding 11,420 tons of C02 emissions per year, or the equivalent of removing 6,345 vehicles per year from circulation.

William Paque, General Manager, Malteurop France & Germany, says: “The biomass plant contributes to optimising the site’s energy performance, which is an essential issue since energy is of major importance in malt production. By reducing our carbon footprint by significantly increasing the share of energy from renewable sources, we will also enable our brewer customers to reduce their products’ environmental footprint.”

As Daniel Faguer, Chief Executive Officer of the Malteurop Group, points out “The construction of this biomass plant is part of the industrial modernisation plan for the site and strengthens our local presence in the Champagne-Ardenne Region. This innovative project will serve as a model for other units in the Malteurop Group; it is a concrete expression of our Sustainable Development policy in the area of energy.”
